As Ecommerce Gets Disrupted, Pioneering Firm Rebrands and Grows


Exclusive Concepts, Inc., a marketing firm north of Boston, recently rebranded as “EXCLUSIVE” to further its mission of helping ecommerce companies grow despite increased competition from Amazon and other marketplaces. Its new website marks a nearly 20-year history of ecommerce innovation, and celebrates clients like New Jersey-based CyberWeld, which has grown 300 percent in five years against larger competitors.

“Today, new threats are emerging,” said founder Scott Smigler, who leased the company’s first office when he was a junior at Bentley University, in Waltham, Mass., and was among the world’s first internet marketing experts to specialize in ecommerce. “Over the next five years online retailers will be competing on two fronts: driving sales through their site, and driving sales through marketplaces. Optimizing the former is necessary to survive, but the latter is where growth will come from. We’re focused on both.”

Since its inception in 1997, EXCLUSIVE has driven faster growth for clients using its holistic, integrated approach to optimize the entire ecommerce marketing funnel. Companies like Cyberweld have gone from $8 million in revenue five years ago to $24 million in 2015. Others, like New York-based SkyGeek, have watched annual revenue climb by 2,675 percent after a decade of working with EXCLUSIVE.

“Using EXCLUSIVE was the best decision I’ve made in growing my company,” said Robert Goodliffe, president of Cyberweld.

EXCLUSIVE’s team has grown 155 percent in the last five years as its active client list has increased by 114 percent, and now includes 665 companies in New England and throughout the U.S. The recent launch of its sister firm, GrowByData, which itself employs 75 data engineers and analysts, also represents a key milestone in its goal to prepare ecommerce businesses to turn their greatest threats into opportunities.
